Absorption-type chillers are powered by energy sources such as natural gas or steam. A solution runs over an evaporator, taking in heat and cooling the water. Meanwhile, a refrigerant takes the heat and moves it out of the system.

Mechanical-type chillers work by using compressors to move refrigerants to remove heat from the water.
